When a person thinks of a dog or a cat many things come to mind. A pet’s undying love for humankind has always been a defining characteristic. That love can have a unique effect on a child with autism spectrum disorders {ASD}. Autism is a serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact. It is one of the fastest growing disorders in the U.S. According to the Center of Disease Control, 1 in 88 children in the U.S. is affected by Autism.
A pet’s positive energy can increase the positive social behavior of these children, and make socializing with others more comfortable. Whether it be soothing the stress away, or just being there to love, many researchers agree that pets provide the spark that ignites and improves social interaction between many autistic children and their peers or adults.
Accordingly, The Haven No-Kill Animal Shelter will be collaborating with Baldwin County’s First Annual Walk for Autism, a two mile route, to take place on April 25, 2015, located at the Fairhope Elementary School at 408 N Section Street in Fairhope. The 501 (c)3 no-kill group will be bringing their “shelter on wheels” filled with adoptable furry companions ready for adoption. Registrants and participants will be able to socialize with cuddly canines from The Haven, and learn firsthand just how much of an impact animals make in the lives of those living with ASD.
The pet adoption will be held at Fairhope Elementary School during the event, which begins at 9:30a.m. Registration for the Race will be $35 the day of and $30 for preregistrants. Participants will also receive a t-shirt.
