The average pet owner thinks about their pet within minutes of waking, often because of a meowed request for kibble or a bark to indicate it’s time for a walk. They are a priority in a pet owner’s day, but are often forgotten when planning for the future.
“We make assumptions about our furry family members, maybe because it’s something we’d rather not think about. We tell ourselves someone would step in to take care of them, but that is leaving their future to chance. Pet ownership comes with costs and responsibilities, and should be as much a part of our estate planning as our other responsibilities,” said Michael Graham, executive director at The Haven No-Kill Animal Shelter.
“I would estimate the number of requests I have had to include a pet in planning is a fraction of a percent, which is alarming, considering the huge number of requests I get for assistance in rehoming a beloved pet by the family after death,” states Kyla Kelim, attorney with Aging in Alabama elder law firm and keynote speaker for this event. “In one hundred percent of those cases, I am positive it is not what the pet owner envisioned or desired, so it’s a sad situation that can be easily avoided with some common sense, simple planning,” she added.
To help pet owners plan for the future, The Haven is offering a free estate planning seminar from noon to 1 p.m., Friday, November 4, at Westminster Village,500 Spanish Fort Blvd in Spanish Fort. Kyla Kelim will assist pet owners in planning for the future in the event their furry family member outlives them.
