PET SAFETY DURING THE 4TH OF JULY

The Haven No-Kill Animal Shelter in Fairhope, AL, urges all pet parents to keep their pets safe during the 4th of July. More dogs and cats are lost during the 4th and the days surrounding it than at any other time of year. Special precautions are needed at this time, as many pets get frighted by the sounds of fireworks.

The Haven offers the following tips:

1. Ensure proper identification. Make sure your dogs have a properly fitted collar with up-to-date tags.

2. Microchip your pet.

3. Consult your veterinarian for possible medication, if your pet has anxiety from loud noises and thunder.

4. Keep pets indoors, in a safe, comfortable place.

5. Do not bring pets to parties. Some party food is toxic to pets, and the chance of their getting loose is greatly increased.

6. Take identifying photos. Take and print a photo of you with each of your pets.

7. Keep vaccines up to date. Ensure your pet is current on the annual vaccines and keep the rabies vaccine certificate in a safe and accessible place.

By following these tips, pet parents can help to ensure that their furry friends stay safe during the 4th of July celebration.

Michael Graham, Executive Director of The Haven, stated, “Our goal is to prevent any unnecessary stress or danger to pets during this time. It is imperative that you keep your “furever” friends safe.”
