Each year more than 8 million pets end up in shelters, and fewer than 20 percent of dogs and 2 percent of cats are claimed by owners. While there is no way to completely beat those odds, microchipping is a great place to start.
Local pet owners have the opportunity to protect their pets through microchipping at The Haven’s upcoming Pet Adoption & Low-Cost Microchip Clinic. From 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, July 16, Dr. Mark A. Colicchio will…
microchip pets for only $20 at Pet Supermarket, 27955 US-98, next door to Publix in Daphne.
The cost of $20 (cash, check only) is less than half the regular per chip cost, which can be $50 or more and may not include the registration of the chip. The Haven uses 24Pwetwatch chips.
Michael Graham, executive director of The Haven, said the benefits of chipping extend beyond finding a lost pet.
“If your pet takes daily medication, when they are scanned for a chip, the veterinarian or shelter will be notified by the chip company about the type of medication and dosage required until the owner can be located. A microchip can be lifesaving in many ways,” Graham said.
Graham also pointed out the timeliness of The Haven’s upcoming Pet Adoption & Low-Cost Microchip Clinic.
“The 2016 Hurricane Season starts June 1 and runs until Nov. 30, so having a permanent pet ID for your pet is ideal when planning for an emergency where one might evacuate with their pet,” Graham said.
“The time is right, the price is right and we are thrilled to have Dr. Colicchio, a licensed veterinarian from “Veterinary House Calls” perform the chipping. We hope everyone will come out and take advantage of the low-cost chipping clinic, or if they’re still searching for their furry family member, they can visit with some of the wonderful pets available for adoption through The Haven,” he said.
